We’re fans of book trailers where authors get their famous buddies to pop in as part of the joke, like Gary Shteyngart’s recent trailer for his memoir, Little Failure.
Now Shteyngart is paying it forward, as just one of the authors who help narrate the first chapter of Lev Grossman’s The Magician’s Land, out August 5. Check out the crowdsourced book trailer below!
Yep, we said “crowdsourced”—because interspersed with the likes of Neil Gaiman, Rainbow Rowell, and Patrick Rothfuss are normal folks—readers who contributed their own unique takes on the line readings. (Like the Minecraft guy. You go, Minecraft guy.)
It’s also fitting because these first few paragraphs are about a bookstore that isn’t what it seems—a safe haven for readers, sure, but perhaps also a path to somewhere deeper and more magical. Check out the cover and official synopsis, then sit back and listen to your favorite authors wax poetic about bookstores while you try to identify which books are on their personal bookshelves:
Featuring Michelle Hodkin, Ryan North, Gregory Maguire, Peter Straub, Terry Brooks, Gary Shteyngart, Rainbow Rowell, Charles Stross, Patrick Rothfuss, J. Courtney Sullivan, Neil Gaiman, Ameriie, Erin Morgenstern, and Lev Grossman.
